From La Rochefoucauld
Paris Wednesday the 18th [February, 1778]

My mother had invited you, Monsieur, to a concert which is to take place at our house tomorrow, and she considered it a great honor and a great pleasure to be able to provide you with a little entertainment; but here is a circumstance of which she was not aware, and about which she asks me to warn you.

This concert is attended by a paid membership, and Lady Stormont is one of the members. She, as well as her husband Lord Stormont, attend all the concerts. Therefore, as your Treaty with the English has not yet been concluded, it is perhaps not yet time for you to meet with this Ambassador. We are all quite upset that this obstacle has arisen, depriving us of the pleasure of your presence for a few moments.

The news from London say that Lord Chatam has the gout, and that he had informed the Duke of Richmond by letter that it would be impossible for him to appear in the House of Lords on the 2nd. An acquaintance of mine saw some letters from the 14th where there was nothing new to report. Farewell, Monsieur, permit me to end without ceremony, and to simply offer you the homage of my respect and my affection

Le Duc de la Rochefoucauld

Addressed: Monsieur, / Monsieur Doctor Benjamin Franklin
Notation: de la Rochefoucauld
